Pith Helmet

Originally made from pith bark. This made it one of the most practical types of hot weather head wear. Air vents all around the helmet allows air to circulate the top and sides. History:

The Pith Helmet is a hard-shell, high-crowned hat with a wide, sloping brim. Originally made of ‘pith’ (soft heartwood) of the Sola plant. Also known as ‘Sola Topees’ or Sola hats. Originally made with a white cotton covering. Later stained an earthy sand color – khaki. This was a form of camouflage in the sandy regions of Africa, India and the Middle East. Soon it became standard on most pith helmets. Currently, there are typically two colors: white and khaki. Ceremonial roles used white, while more practical roles used khaki. Pith helmets came about around the mid-1800s. Helmet design was taken from the German Pickelhaube helmet. Designed for use in hot, dry and humid climates. It has a number of features which make it ideal for these kinds of conditions. Through the centuries, changes to the construction and the materials used has molded they current style.
